My Experience:
The 4Moms Sleep Trainer is easy to use- just pop in the batteries and get started. Now, I am no sleep training expert- I have bought and returned many of the books, tried cry it out, yet and still my baby girl was sleeping in my bed. Not through the night either.
My daughter had very bad GERD from birth- trying three different medications before we found one that worked, so her sleep pattern was horrible from the beginning as my husband and I babied our little girl. Napping was a huge dilemma for us also. I hoped that the Goodnight Sleep Trainer would help Baby C learn to sleep- on her own.
While I am not against the cry it out method, I am against losing my ability to hear thanks to my daughter. Maybe I am a wuss…
4Moms recommends not starting sleep training when there is a major event going on in your child’s life such as teething. Lucky for me when I received the Sleep Trainer after a few days of using it, my daughters molars began to come in- and that was great fun. This delayed our sleep training efforts. Following the molars, she got a very bad cold which lasted over a week- more fun. She then needed to go in to see a Pediatric Neurologist for evaluation regarding interesting behavior she developed.
So while I cannot tell you that the Sleep Trainer helped my daughter sleep- I do understand the concept and how it is supposed to work. I can also tell you of the online support offered along with this device.
The Sleep Trainer has a simple concept of delaying your response to your child’s crying. So while you are not letting them cry it out with no attention or affection from you, it does over time, teach the child to gradually expect you not to be around at “sleepy time.” It starts off with one minute intervals and goes up to five, ten and so on. The Goodnight Sleep Method is a ten day process. (Maybe less, depending on how quickly your child catches on)
You can track your child’s sleep progress online using the Good Night Sleep Trainer website. You must first register for an account, which is free. Once registered, you can upload and analyze your child’s sleep habits. You can view their sleeping patterns day-by-day:
In this view you can see how many hours your child spent on a specific day sleeping, crying or playing.
You can also view your child’s sleeping patterns by week: (Click on photo to enlarge)
This view allows you to analyze your child’s sleep, play and crying time across a number of days- telling you how long your child spent doing each.
You can also take your child’s data and compare it to statistical data (i.e. how much sleep is expected for a baby that is your child’s age):
There are also sleep resources available for you on the website to help provide you with more information.
Had my daughter not been hit time after time with either sickness or teething, I would have followed through with the entire program. I can see, though, how this product can be helpful to parents that are struggling to get their child to sleep. Especially for parents who like hard data that they can use to their advantage. With the Goodnight Sleep Trainer you can see how long your child is sleeping or awake or crying and try and use that data to help them get to sleep. Also, it may alert you to something that you may need to speak with your Pediatrician about.

About 4Moms:
“It’s hard to believe that a company called 4moms actually started with 2 guys, but hey, that’s just how it worked out. In 2005 Rob Daley and Henry Thorne – with their 30+ years of business and engineering experience between them – began tackling the juvenile market.
An original focus group brought together 4 real life moms – Jenn, Cindy, Kristen and Elizabeth – for input and expertise (they do have 13 kids between them including three sets of twins.) The success from that meeting prompted us to not only name the brand after them, but make them the face of the company.
Now 4moms is a team of 15 engineers, researchers, and developers who are dedicated to creating innovative products that make life easier for parents like you.”
